National Association of Pension Funds
Purpose: The
National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF)
is the leading UK body providing representation and other services for those
involved in designing, operating, advising and investing in all aspects of
pensions and other retirement provision. NAPF’s aim is to be the leading voice
of retirement provision through the workplace.
Membership: Private and public sector pension funds and their advisers which includes
lawyers, actuaries and investment consultants. The pension funds represent over £800bn in assets, a large proportion of institutional investor funds.

Structure: Full time secretariat responsible for business and administrative activities
partly within the association’s commercial arm. NAPF members make up the policy making investment and benefits councils. The NAPF board has overall
responsibility for the association and it is made up of members of the councils and the immediate past chairman. NAPF Services is a wholly owned
subsidiary company, which runs the NAPF’s business activities such as conferences and training courses.

Main corporate governance interest:
As a representative of institutional shareholders has been involved in
development of corporate governance guidelines working with other groups.
Connections with other organisations: Part of the Institutional Shareholder Committee (ISC)
made up of other major institutional shareholder bodies, the
Association of British Insurers, the
Investment Management Association and the
Association of Investment Companies. The ISC produced a
statement of principles on shareholder activism in
October 2002.
Position towards government: Keen that all shareholder activism is voluntary and is a lobby group in all
aspects of pensions as well as investment policy.
