Purpose:
Business in the Community (BITC)
states, "We support and challenge companies to integrate responsible business
through their operations in order to have a positive impact on society and
therefore be of 'public benefit."
Membership: Over 750 companies, including
over 70 companies within the FTSE 100 and 82% of the FTSE’s UK leading companies
in their sector. twelve regional and national teams across the UK including
Wales and N Ireland.

Activities: The BITC has 12 regional and
national teams across the UK including Wales and Northern Ireland. Its teams
support members companies to manage, integrate, measure and report on
responsible business and offer expert advice where needed. The teams work as
catalysts to engage national and local business and regional units of nationally
headquartered companies to achieve its aims.
Main programmes:
CR Index,
which provides a benchmark for company corporate responsibility performance;
Annual Awards for Excellence, which provide the opportunity for
companies across the UK to be awarded a coveted 'Big Tick' recognising their
positive impact;
The Prince's Seeing is Believing programme, which invites senior business
leaders to see how businesses can tackle social problems in some of the UK's
most deprived areas and
Cares which
aims to encourage more employees to become volunteers.
Position towards government: The awards for excellence are supported by the
Department of Trade & Industry. The
BITC also supports the
All Party Parliamentary Group on Corporate Responsibility and pays for its
secretariat provided by Central Lobby
