Chinese company tops Greenpeace poll
Lenovo has made a surprise showing in
Greenpeace’s latest
ranking of electronic manufacturers' recycling and toxic content policies. The
Chinese PC maker leaped from its previous low ranking to displace Nokia from the
lead position it has occupied since the ranking’s launch last year.
Lenovo won top
marks for its e-waste policies and practice, offering takeback and recycling in
all the countries where its products are sold. It also reports as a percentage
of its sales the amount of
e-waste it recycles.
Following on
Lenovo’s heals was Nokia in second place,
while Sony Ericsson came in third and
Dell fourth. Ranking last was
Apple, which Greenpeace said was languishing
far behind its peers and had made no progress since the index’s launch.
Iza Kruszewska,
Greenpeace international toxics campaigner, said: “Given the growing mountains
of e-waste in China – both imported and domestically generated – it is
heartening to see a Chinese company taking the lead”.
