Americans back corporate environmental responsibility

The overwhelming numbers of respondents (93%) to the latest consumer environmental survey by Cone, the US consultancy, are looking to companies for action on preserving the environment.

Respondents are calling for concrete action from companies: 71% support the reduction of pollution caused by office and manufacturing operations; 69% support the design of environmentally-friendly products with minimal packaging; and 59% support companies’ donation of money to environmental causes.

Mike Lawrence, Cone executive vice president of corporate responsibility, said: “Companies need to have a credible environmental strategy that reaches across their operations if they expect to secure consumer trust and loyalty”.

This comes as part of what the survey identifies as an increasing environmental awareness among respondents. The survey recorded a one-third rise in those interested in the environment as compared to a year ago, and nearly half (47%) said they have purchased environmentally-friendly products in the last year.
