Best Practice & EthicsBriefs .....
The reasons behind the Serious Fraud Office’s (SFO’s) decision to drop an inquiry into BAE Systems’ alleged use of bribery to secure a Saudi arms deal must be subject to an independent inquiry, Liberal Democrat deputy leader Vincent Cable told the House of Common last month. Cable said the SFO’s decision to drop the probe has undermined the rule of law and done “enormous damage” to the UK’s reputation within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. He also referred to a diary entry by the late Robin Cook, former foreign secretary, which stated “The Chairman of BAe Systems appeared to have the key to the garden door of No. 10”.
