ResearchUK, France and Germany shows low level of trust of CEOs
Only 18% of opinion leaders in the UK, France and Germany trust chief executives, the lowest figure ever recorded by the Edelman trust barometer, a survey of 3,100 opinion leaders in 18 countries.
The level of trust was recorded as slightly higher in the US, at 22%. In comparison, 28% of European respondents and 36% from the US had trust in “average employees”. David Brain, Edelman Europe chief executive, said these figures make it important for chief executives to provide critical information to employees and enthusiastic consumers.
However, business did achieve the distinction of being more trusted than government and media in 13 out of the 18 countries surveyed. In the US an all time high of 53% said they trusted business.
This is compared to the low of 44% recorded in 2002 immediately after the scandals at Enron and WorldCom. Again, the three European countries trusted business less – here only 34% of respondents did so – but this was still higher than trust in media and government, which stood at 25% and 22% respectively.
Companies based in Sweden and Canada were found to be most trusted globally; least trusted were those headquartered in Brazil, Mexico and Russia.
