Moss replaces Harvey at Aviva

Richard Harvey is to step down as chief executive of Aviva, the insurance group, after almost ten years in the role. He led Norwich Union in its 1997 demutualisation, and then in its 2000 merger with CGU to create Aviva.

Harvey will retire on 11 July, and will be succeeded by Andrew Moss, Aviva’s finance director. The finance director position will at that time be taken up by Philip Scott, an executive director.

James Harding, The Times’ business editor (11 January), noted Aviva had been advised on the appointment of Harvey’s replacement by the ubiquitous headhunter, Anna Mann. Mann, said Harding, drew up an “ideal candidate” profile and “benchmarked” internal candidates against outside contenders.

However, argued Harding, benchmarking is misleading, giving the appearance of objectivity and a methodical process, only to reaffirm the board’s preference for an insider. Appointment of an internal candidate is often sensible, said Harding, but the Aviva board did not need to turn the process into a pseudo-science.
