BT has promised an 80% cut in its carbon emissions by 2016. The telecoms company also pledged to examine the potential of wind power as part of a complete review of its energy supply, and to incorporate environmental factors into its procurement processes. As part of this scheme, BT announced it would be conducting a complete audit of energy consumption at its data centres, will propose lower carbon solutions to customers, and will work with its 104,000 employees to reduce their personal carbon footprints. Paul Reynolds, BT Wholesale chief executive, said tackling climate change presents significant business opportunities, and those that lead the way will reap the rewards.
US computer company Dell has initiated a scheme to help its customers offset the carbon dioxide produced when they power their computers. Dell’s programme allows its customers to make a donation that will be used by two participating non-profit organisations – The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org – to plant trees in sustainably-managed forests. Dell said customer donation of $2 for a laptop and $6 for a desktop computer will offset carbon emissions equivalent to powering the average computer for three years. Larry Selzer, The Conservation Fund president, said Dell’s initiative serves as a model for corporate environmental stewardship.
