Best practice & Ethics

Companies work together on online ethics

Companies, investors, academics and human rights organisations have come together to develop a set of principles for online freedom of expression and privacy rights.

The initiative builds on previous work undertaken by Google, Microsoft, Vodafone and Yahoo! under the auspices of Business for Social Responsibility, and Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) discussions on how to advance civil liberties on the internet.

Leslie Harris, CDT executive director, said technology companies have a vital role to play in helping democratic reform in developing countries. Therefore, he said, it is important that guidelines are available to help deal with government monitoring of legitimate online activities and censoring of democratic material.

Among the participants in this latest process are: Amnesty International, F&C Asset Management, Google, Microsoft and the International Business Leaders Forum.
