Tom Albanese is to succeed Leigh Clifford as chief executive of Rio Tinto, the FTSE 100 miner, effective 1 May 2007. Albanese joined Rio Tinto in 1993 and since then has held a number of senior positions, including head of exploration. He is currently group resources director.

  

Peter Johnson has been appointed chairman of Rank, the gaming company, succeeding Alun Cathcart. Cathcart retires at the end of February, and Johnson will become deputy chairman on 1 January 2007 and move up to chairman on 1 March 2007. He is currently chairman of Inchcape, the car hire firm.

  

Wm Morrison, the supermarket chain, has lost Marie Melnyk as its managing director. Her board responsibilities will temporarily be taken up by Mark Bolland, the company’s new chief executive. Morrison said her departure had been prompted by medial advice.

  

Patrick Maugein, chairman of oil exploration company SOCO International, has died as the result of an extended illness. He has been replaced by Rui de Sousa, a SOCO non-executive director since July 1999.

 

Christopher Hopkinson and Denis Kurochkin have joined the board of AIM-listed Imperial Energy as executive directors. Hopkinson, previously managing director of its Tomsk operations, became Imperial’s chief operating officer and chief executive designate. On the company’s admission to the main market, which is expected in March, he will assume the chief executive role, while Peter Levine, who currently holds both positions, will continue as chairman. Kurochkin will remain in his role as chief financial officer, Russia.
